Our process begins with quantitative screens for low beta securities showing growth in both free cash flow and dividends. These screens reduce the investible universe of public corporations down to just 40-80 names. Focusing first on the companies trading at lower valuations we then conduct fundamental research on the companies’ business prospects and economic performance.

Horizon Investments

Horizon Investments is a tactical manager with a goal based overlay. They are particularly good for retirement distribution accounts targeting specific yields. Think of them as offering an effective bucketing strategy with a tactical overlay. Their portfolios are called Real Spend Hybrid and appear on page 2 of the TCA Allocation form.

TURN KEY ASSET MANAGERS AND SOLICITOR AGREEMENTS:

American Funds is one of the largest, most respected names in the mutual fund industry. They can now also custody and pull fees for advisors on many account types.

Those of you who have given up your securities license in the past few years can now move remaining American Funds assets to HBW Advisory with reduced paperwork (no new application and no change in client account numbers). The folks who remain dually licensed can now put new assets at American Funds through HBW Advisory rather than the BD. Let’s dive into a few details.

To get started you need to call their RIA service line at 800-421-5450. Let them know you are with HBW Advisory Services and would like to get an advisor number with them. Once you have your advisor number you will also have access to their website: americanfunds.com/F2direct. Most of the questions you will have can be answered there, including how to complete paperwork.

In broad brush we now have access to three different programs within American Funds:

  1. F2 shares for many account types including IRA and Individual accounts (plus the ability to auto-bill fees on advisory accounts).
  2. F2 shares for 529 accounts can also be billed now but are only offered at a reduced fee schedule (see below).
  3. R5e and R6 share classes for workplace retirement plans such as 401Ks. We can pull fees here too but the process is much more complicated.

Several details here to try to keep in mind:

  1. The F2 fee pull accounts have a single schedule across the entire firm: 1.25% on accounts up to 499,999 and 1.0% on accounts 500,000 or above. Note this is not tiered so that the first 499 pays and 1.25% and the rest at 1.0%. Once they hit the lower rate the entire balance is paid at the lower rate.
  2. The maximum fee available for F2 shares in 529 accounts is a flat 0.75% or 75 bps.
  3. Accounts eligible for share class conversion to F2 will still be subject to the 2 year aging rule. We suggest you use DST to access account opening dates when submitting accounts for approval.
  4. The R shares have more flexible fee schedules available, but I’ve been told the process is more complicated and we don’t have any experience in this department yet.
  5. They hope to be able to allow for auto-fee debiting on the 529 accounts by the end of this year but no promises. It’s an issue of process and legality.
  6. The 529 and Retirement plan departments are separate from the Advisory F2 so you will have to learn to navigate among them. I’ve found so far that the people answering the main line don’t mind sending you quickly to the right folks.
  7. There are no per-fund investment minimums to worry about.

For the dually licensed:

  1. Update: Cetera is not allowing the f2 shares on HBW's platform for new accounts either. 
  2. And Cetera is restricting the movement and conversion of accounts from A or C to F2 outside of their own platform (stinks, but is anybody surprised?).

If you are converting an existing account:

Send us an F-2 Share Conversion Form. You and the account owners must sign all the authorizations in the form. A signature guarantee isn't required.

If you are opening a new account:

We require a completed F-2 Share Account Application and/or  529 F-2 Share Account Application, the applicable supplemental form(s) and required signatures:

You submit this business as usual through our Trades desk. DocuSign or RightSignature are both allowable but in both cases you must save the completed documents with certificates and email them to HBW as you would other business.

Betterment for Advisors

Betterment's platform is good for much more than taxable accounts it just happens to excel in the area of tax-manged accounts. Betterment has it's own contract for financial advice and it's own Account Application Bundle. Betterment has a getting started guide as well as a powerpoint file that contains a 2-page marketing piece you can use with clients. Be sure to update the invitation link on page 2 to reflect your personal url for signing up clients. There is also this piece which shows you the account funding options. You can watch an overview of the platform here.

Bettermentfor Advisors now offers portfolios that are unique to the advisory platform. Meaning they are not also available to retail investors. Call (877) 283-9520 for Paychex's national sales desk for advisor support. When prompted you can provide HBW Advisory Services' CRD number which is 143665. Simply ask for the name and number of the wholesaler in your area to get started. The paperwork is done on a client by client basis and is quite minimal. The is a reciprocity deal. Paycheck will provide you a list of Paychex payroll clients who do not have Paychex retirement plans. Your job is to sell and service the Paychex plan for which you will be paid an advisory fee by the plan sponsor. Your fee is negotiable with the plan sponsor but will usually average 25-50 bps. Paychex will occasionally also offer to put you on existing plans who have lost their advisors.
